First Date Night

After spending a few days moving into our new house, Shawn and I went out on the town tonight. There's nothing like leaving the boys for an evening knowing that they'll have a fun time and it won't cost us $50 in babysitter fees. Wa-hoo! We went see Man som hatar kvinnor (incorrectly translated The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) at 50th & France and then we headed downtown to The Local for a drink on the patio. It was 81 degrees at 11:15 tonight. Gloriously steamy and breezy. Tons of people out on the town, free parking, cheap drinks. Dreamy!

I'm typing this on my mom's iPad. As I said at dinner tonight, I think Shawn has fallen in love with this contraption...someday, Shawn :)

Master Butcher's Singing Club. Wow. It's premiering at the Guthrie, and I went with my mom and my sister-in-law. What a treat! Even a little wine and appetizer before the show. The playwright infused more humor than Louise Erdrich presented in her novel. I found it cathartic to laugh after witnessing so many deaths in the play. Also, much of the humor was brought on by alcohol. It reminded me of my college thesis: Survival by Six Packs. I HIGHLY recommend this play. It's showing until November 11, 2010. Then, I bet it's off to Broadway.
Checking out Nicole's new website. Her artwork is amazing, and I now have two pieces: a cheeseboard and now a tiny vase that is amazingly and intricately painted.
While packing, I've seen two fabulous movies that I must recommend. _Feast of Love_ is first movie that hasn't put me to sleep on my couch in three years. Morgan Freeman anchors this story about love (romantic, familial, generational) and the power of optimism and hope. This is a great at-home date night rental. _Two Days in Paris_ is a Julie Delpy film. She starred in another of my favs, _Before Sunrise_. If you like that, you'll love _Two Days in Paris_. It's laugh-out-loud funny...to me. Not so much for my packing partner, Shawn.
Recent good reads: Happines Hypothesis. I think I have found the book that explains my stance on religion, politics, and my entire outlook on life. It's not a beach read, nor is it a self-help book as the title implies. It's a huge compiliation and reflection on psychological studies as well as a study of major world religions and where they coincide. A must read. Also good reads: Race in North America, The Help, Mary Jane Butter's magazine, and I just started Barbara Kingsolver's new one, Lacuna. Of course, it will become a favorite as I love her times 10,000.
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...so good. so Swedish. Shawn's reading it now. The first 100 pages are slow, but it's well worth the wait. Luckily, it's the first in a 3-part series. Sadly, the author Steig Larsson has recently passed away. He isn't here to bask in his celebrity. Den ar en god bok!
Finally found a yarn shop that rivals the Tangled Skein. The Stitch House in Dorchester has a similar feel, though still not quite the same. I've knit up three hats this week. Maybe a hat for each of my boys: Lachen, Aksel, Jonah, Fredrik, and Peter (Howard, not Hemberger. But maybe I'll kick one out for my brother as well.)
I'm thinking St. Mark's needs to put some solar panels on the roof of the main building. It's actually been sunny here as of late. Click this link to see all the ample roof space.

Reading! I just finished Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. While I question its research methods and tendency to turn an anecdote into a theory, I did find it incredible inspiring. Maybe I'm not failing on the parenting front, after all.
